Meet Our Ministers
Dr. Sam Roach – Pastor
A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Sam practiced law before entering vocational ministry. After serving on staff at a church in Texas, he pastored churches in Tampa and Charlotte prior to accepting the call to serve as the Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church of Sanford in 2019. Sam holds several graduate degrees, including a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master of Theology from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Texas, Arlington.
Sam has a passion for teaching God’s Word and seeing God transform lives through the power of the gospel. He has served on international mission teams to Belgium, Bangladesh, Costa Rica, and Honduras. His interests include reading, tennis, and golf.
Sam is from St. Petersburg, Florida, and his wife, Alysia, is from Winter Park, Florida. All three of their daughters –Savannah (20), Kendall (18), and Whitney (8)–were born in Central Florida. Now, having lived in North Carolina since 2015, and with two of their daughters currently attending UNC-Chapel Hill, they have enthusiastically adopted “The Tar Heel State” as their new home. The family enjoys traveling and playing board games together.
MIKE HANDY – Minister of Music/Senior Adults
With Music degrees from Middle Tennessee State University and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Michael and his wife Lu Anne have two grown sons living in Arkansas and Virginia, and have been blessed with four beautiful grandchildren. Mike is responsible for the music and worship ministries of the church, as well as the ministry to senior adults. Coming to the church in 2009, he oversees the development of nine choirs, working with church members that serve in leadership positions in many of the groups. He also oversees the Senior Adult Activities Committee and plans trips and other events for the church’s senior members.
JACOB PETERSON – Minister of Youth
Jacob is a North Carolina native and graduated from Campbell University’s Divinity School. He and his wife have two sons and have been serving churches for twelve years. Jacob enjoys pointing students closer to Christ and helping them develop a servant’s heart. In addition to planning and leading the regular activities for our youth, Jacob has helped lead our entire church in joining the youth in a yearly summer mission trip. All participants regardless of age, come back changed. Tired? Yes! But grateful and excited to show God’s love and feel His hand on their lives.
CINDY HALL – Minister of Outreach/Activities
After earning a degree in Physical Education and Biology from Wheaton College, and an Elementary Education Degree from the University of Minnesota, with a Master’s Degree in Christian Counseling, Cindy taught school for 20 plus years before the Lord called her to serve at First Baptist Church in a ministerial position. She has served since 2006. She loves working with the people and has a passion for sharing the love of God and the saving grace of Jesus Christ with others. Her responsibilities include Small Group Bible Studies, Upward Basketball and Cheerleading, After School Program, Family Life Center programming, counseling and community outreach.
JONATHAN LETT – Children’s Activities Coordinator
Jonathan is a lifelong Sanford native and a graduate of Lee Senior High School. Jonathan has been a member of FBC since the early ‘90s. He has participated in many mission trips, helped with vacation bible school and also leads the children’s sermon on Sundays at the 11:00 am service. He has worked with the FBC After School program for the past 10 years, with 8 years as the director. Jonathan has worked closely with the Upward basketball program for 12 years. Jonathan is responsible for the children’s activities, After School program, summer camp and also works closely with the Preschool program. He loves working with and sharing God’s word with children of all ages.
