I love listening to these words as Handel wrote them in his masterpiece Messiah. However, they were first written by Isaiah, “For to us a Child shall be born, to us a Son shall be given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting father, Prince of Peace,” (Isaiah 9:6, Amplified Reading Bible). These words are so easy to sing but putting them actually into effect in my life is sometimes much more difficult!

I often stumble over that phrase about government. I’m pretty sure Isaiah wasn’t referring to Washington, DC or even Raleigh! He was more probably talking about governing my heart, and there comes the rub! Do I really want to let Him govern over all of the little hidden places I keep pretending He wouldn’t want to see? But for Him to be my Wonderful Counselor, I’m going to have to let Him fully in and really BE Lord of all those areas.

When I make that daily decision, though, the most fantastic thing happens! He truly becomes MY Prince of Peace, He assumes His proper role as MY Mighty God, and He fills all of the deficiencies of my earthly father by becoming My Everlasting Father. May I challenge you to ask Him what areas in your life still need to fall under His government? Isn’t this the perfect time to let Him give you that Gift of His perfect Peace? Let Him be Emmanuel for you in a brand, new way! Then sing HALLELUJAH!

Unto Us

Unto us a Child is born, and unto us a Son is given.

God with us, go and tell, Emmanuel has come from heaven.

And His name will ever be the Prince of peace, the Wonderful Counselor.

He’s the great and mighty Lord; bow before our holy Savior!

Re: Unto us a Child is born, Hope to all the world!

Unto us the Son of God has come, sing hallelujah!

Everlasting Father, name above all names! God is with us, sing hallelujah!

Unto us a Child is born, and unto us a Son is given.

Emmanuel has come from heaven.

And His name will ever be the Prince of peace, the Wonderful Counselor.

The great and mighty Lord; we bow before our holy Savior!

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is Giv’n.

He’s the Prince of peace! He’s the Mighty God! He’s the Savior born to set the captives free!

He’s the Promised One, the Messiah come, And His love will reign throughout eternity!

Unto us a Child is born, Hope to all the world!

Unto us the Son of God has come, we will sing hallelujah!

Shining in the darkness, Light to all the world!

Unto us a Child is born, Hope to all the world!

Unto us the Son of God has come, we will sing hallelujah!

Everlasting Father, name above all names! God is with us,

Sing hallelujah! Sing hallelujah! Hallelujah!
